Equipment

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Autumn Apple Butter Grilled Cheese
  1. In a nonstick skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the shallots and thyme, and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the shallots are soft and translucent. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Spread apple butter on each of two slices of bread. Layer the sautéed shallots, followed by thin apple slices and a mix of Alpine-style and Havarti cheeses. Top with the second slice of bread.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until fully combined to create an egg wash. Set aside.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add remaining butter. Once melted, place the sandwiches egg side down and brush the top with the egg wash. Cook for about 5 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Carefully flip the sandwiches and add an extra pat of butter to the skillet. Cook for another 3-5 minutes until both sides are golden and the cheese is melted.
  6. Remove from the skillet, let cool slightly, cut in half and serve warm.

Maintain medium heat while cooking to prevent burning the bread. Shredding the cheese enhances melting. Experiment with different cheeses for personalization.
