Step-by-Step Instructions for Autumn Apple Butter Grilled Cheese
- In a nonstick skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the shallots and thyme, and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the shallots are soft and translucent. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Spread apple butter on each of two slices of bread. Layer the sautéed shallots, followed by thin apple slices and a mix of Alpine-style and Havarti cheeses. Top with the second slice of bread.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until fully combined to create an egg wash. Set aside.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add remaining butter. Once melted, place the sandwiches egg side down and brush the top with the egg wash. Cook for about 5 minutes or until golden brown.
- Carefully flip the sandwiches and add an extra pat of butter to the skillet. Cook for another 3-5 minutes until both sides are golden and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the skillet, let cool slightly, cut in half and serve warm.
