Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt ¼ cup of unsalted butter with ¾ cup of brown sugar over medium heat until bubbly, then pour into the cake pan.
  3. Arrange sliced apples decoratively in a circular pattern over the caramel.
Mixing
  1. Combine dry ingredients: 2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp baking soda, ½ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, and ¼ tsp nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, cream together ½ cup butter and 1 cup sugar, then beat in eggs and vanilla extract.
  3. Add ½ cup sour cream and ½ cup milk, then mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Spread the batter over the apple layer in the pan.
Baking
  1. Bake for 40–45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  2. Cool in pan for 10–15 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
  3. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
