Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8x8-inch baking pan by greasing with butter or lining with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. In another bowl, cream together the butter and sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Prepare the maple glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, maple syrup, maple extract, and milk until smooth.
  10. Once cooled, drizzle or spread the glaze over the bars, then let it set before slicing.
