- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions but set a timer to undercook it by one minute. Drain and rinse with cold water.
- In a large saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook until bubbly but not browned.
- Gradually pour in 3 cups of milk while whisking continuously to eliminate lumps. Allow to simmer until thickened.
- Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 cups of diced cooked ham until melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.
- Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish. Optionally, sprinkle with breadcrumbs mixed with butter.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
