Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions but set a timer to undercook it by one minute. Drain and rinse with cold water.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook until bubbly but not browned.
  4. Gradually pour in 3 cups of milk while whisking continuously to eliminate lumps. Allow to simmer until thickened.
  5. Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 cups of diced cooked ham until melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.
  7. Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish. Optionally, sprinkle with breadcrumbs mixed with butter.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
