Step-by-Step Instructions for Strawberry Danish
  1. Prepare the homemade Danish pastry a day in advance by mixing flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Cut in cold butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add milk and knead lightly, then refrigerate overnight.
  2. Roll out the Danish pastry to ¼ inch thickness, cut into squares, and shape into flower-like pockets. Let rest on a baking sheet.
  3. Mix cream cheese, sugar, milk, and lemon zest until smooth. Set aside while shaping the pastries.
  4. Fill the pastry pockets with strawberries and jam, but avoid overfilling.
  5. Brush with the egg wash and sprinkle sugar on top. Bake at 375°F for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Cool on a wire rack for 5 to 10 minutes before serving warm.
